Play Offs DERBY CAN MAKE FINAL BUT WE STILL FANCY WIGAN

DERBY CAN MAKE FINAL BUT WE STILL FANCY WIGAN

11th May 2014

Derby are firm favourites, not only to beat Brighton on Sunday in the return leg of their play-off semi, but they are also favourites to gain promotion given that QPR and Wigan are all square.

Derby are no bigger than 5/4 (Bet365) to win the play-offs and gain promotion. Brighton, who have a mountain to climb are as big as 12/1 on the exchanges.

But logically, Derby could still be not much bigger price if they do win today and get through - because it doesn't matter who they face - both Wigan and QPR will be tough opponents at Wembley.

There's no doubt Steve McClarren has done a sterling job at Derby and they did the league double over Brighton. They won the home game back in January courtesy of a single goal from Patrick Bamford. A similar scoreline will be on the cards today.

Derby were the form team going into the play-offs with 19 points from their last 8 games compared to Brighton's 16.

They just have the edge and 20 goal Chris Martin is a real handful upfront.

McClarren has too much experience to go mad from the offset with a one goal cushion and Brighton will find opportunities hard.

Now though is the time also to back Wigan to win promotion. Any value with Derby has gone. But there will be plenty of support for QPR with home advantage. But QPR boss Harry Redknapp is actually inexperienced so far as play-off football is concerned.

Wigan as a team are no stranger to cup football - which is effectively what this is, having lifted last season's FA Cup and reached the Wembley semi final this.

Boss Uwe Rosler experienced heartache at Wembley last season with Brentford and he will not want a repeat. Wigan can get through in West London on Monday.

Wigan are a decent bet at 10/3 with Bet365 and Corals to get promotion.
